In 1969 he was involved in a car accident at Chappaquiddick Island, Massachusetts in which his female passenger died. When he tried to become elected president of the US in 1980, many people remembered this accident and were unwilling to support him. He was a US senator for Massachusetts from 1962 until his death. |
